Despite having more first downs, more yards rushing, and winning the time of possession, Bishop McCort was unable to keep up with Johnstown's quick-strike offense as the Trojans defeated the Crushers 36-7 Saturday night at Point Stadium.
Bishop McCort rushed for 258 yards while holding the Trojans to just 74. The Crushers also had 19 first downs to Johnstown's 11. But, the Trojans were able to score three touchdowns of over 50 yards in the first half to take a commanding lead.
Johnstown quarterback Jeremy Updyke found Kahari Perry for 77-yard and 51-yard touchdown passes for the Trojans first two scores. Later in the first half, A.J. Fisher connected with Kareem Gibson for a 60-yard score, and Updyke added a touchdown pass to Tavis Price just before intermission to 29-0 halftime lead.
The Trojans used four Crusher turnovers, one fumble and three interceptions, to build their lead. After a 1-yard score dive from Fisher, the Crushers finally got on the scoreboard when freshman
Carnell Andrews found the endzone from 26 yards out to set the final score at 36-7.
Despite the lopsided score, the Crushers controlled the ball for over 32 minutes and drove the ball deep into Trojan territory numerous times only to have the drives stall or end in turnovers.
Senior running back
Marc Smith led the Bishop McCort offense with 151 yards on 23 carries while Andrews added 81 yards on 15 carries. For the season, Smith is averaging 110 yards per game and almost 7 yards per carry.
The Crushers will travel to Westmont Saturday afternoon to take on the Hilltoppers at Price Field.Â
