Over the holiday break the McCort Wrestling team was extremely active. They competed in three tournaments including two of the most arduous high school events in the country.
On December 20-21, they traveled to the University of Delaware for Beast of the East. The team finished in 4th place out of 198 teams. At 150 pounds,
Bo Bassett dominated his way to a tournament championship defeating the #2 ranked individual in the country by a score of 15-0 in the finals. At 165 pounds, teammate
Melvin Miller wouldn't be outdone winning by a score of 17-1 in the finals to also claim a title. Other placers were
Jackson Butler who finished 4th at 144 pounds and
Caleb Rodriguez who finished 5th at heavy weight.
December 29-30, the team traveled to Canon-McMillan high school for the prestigious Powerade tournament. The team finished in 6th place out of 74 teams. At 139 pounds,
Jax Forrest won 20-13 in the finals over the #4 ranked wrestler in the country to be the 7th wrestler in the history of the event to win 4 titles. At 160 pounds,
Melvin Miller claimed his second career Powerade title winning 16-4 in the finals.
To close out the break the team traveled to Central Cambria on January 2-3 for the LHAC Conference Championship. McCort ran away with the team title with a score of 254 points. Chestnut Ridge was 2nd with 208.5 and Bellefonte finished 3rd with 160.5. McCort had 8 finalists out of the 11 athletes they entered. The 6 Conference Champions were:
Keegan Bassett (121),
Jackson Butler (145),
Bo Bassett (152),
Melvin Miller (160),
Marquez Gordon (215) and
Caleb Rodriguez (285). The runner-ups were
Owen McMullen (139) and
Emory Gunby (172).
Jack Silfies finished 3rd at 133 pounds and
Josh Spontak finished 7th at 189 pounds to round out the place winners.
