Week 7 Recap:Bishop McCort hung with a well regarded Somerset team last week before ultimately coming up short by a score of 27-16. The Crushers dropped to 1-6 on the year, while Somerset improved to 6-1.Â
The opening quarter proved to be a defensive struggle with both teams trading a few possessions. The Golden Eagles eventually struck first with a Dylan Barnes one yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead, which held up after one quarter.Â
The Crushers asserted themselves in the second quarter.
Carnell Andrews dashed through the Somerset defense for an electrifying 57 yard run to put McCort deep in Somerset territory.
Anthony Walters capped off the drive with a 3 yard touchdown run to tie things up at 7 all. The McCort defensive than generated a big turnover with Brandon Lavely recovering a Jake Heiple fumble. The Crushers' offense operated an impressive two-minute drill that led to a
Shane Steele 30 yard field goal to give McCort a 10-7 halftime lead.Â
Somerset opened the second half with a quick and efficient drive. Dylan Barnes sprinted in from 37 yards out to give Somerset the lead back 14-10. After a McCort turnover on downs deep in Somerset territory, the Golden Eagles pieced together a 16 play 92 yard drive capped off by yet another Barnes score to raise Somerset's lead to 20-10 after three quarters.Â
McCort showed some resilience to start the final frame. The Crushers mounted a 9 play 71 yard drive that resulted in 2 yard touchdown run by
Anthony Walters. That score brought the Crushers to within 4 points at 20-16. Somerset answered quickly, though. Jake Heiple scored from 5 yards out to take the score to 27-16 with 6:40 left to go in the game.
