The Last Time:Bishop McCort used a big second quarter to take a lead over Cambria Heights and held on for a 22-14 victory in Patton Friday night.Â
The Crushers scored all 22 of their points in an 8-minute span just before halftime on their way to their first victory of the season. The Highlanders took the early lead late in the opening quarter when quarterback Eddie Link found James Baum for a 36-yard touchdown pass.Â
Bishop McCort answered right back early in the second quarter when Crusher quarterback
Levi Cook hit senior wideout
Corey Hall for a 32-yard scoring strike. The Crushers took an 8 -7 lead on the extra point attempt when Zef Leech took a bad snap and ran it in for the conversion.Â
The Crusher defense stopped Cambria Heights on the next possession, and the offense added another quick score. Freshman
Carnell Andrews led the attack on the drive with a 35-yard reception followed by a 10-yard touchdown run to put Bishop McCort ahead 15-7.Â
Bishop McCort ended the scoring just before halftime when senior running back
Marc Smith burst through the line for a 44-yard gain down to the 1-yard line, and Cook followed with a quarterback keeper for the touchdown giving the Crushers a 22-7 lead at the break.Â
Both teams' defenses turned in strong second halves as the Crushers and Highlanders traded punts throughout the third quarter. Cambria Heights added a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter to close the gap to 22-14, but the Crusher defense held forcing a turnover on downs and an interception on the Highlanders final two drive to seal the win.Â
Smith led the Crusher attack for the night with 126 yards on 15 carries. Cook added 83 yards passing to go along with a passing and rushing touchdown. Andrews finished with 113 yards combined rushing, receiving, and returning.
Week 1 Recap:Bishop McCort dropped their 2015 opener by a score of 26-14 on the road against the Forest Hills Rangers. The Crushers started the game with an impressive time consuming drive that spanned 11 plays and 62 yards and resulted in a 26 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Levi Cook to senior wide receiver Michael Stem. Shane Steele added the extra point to give the Crushers an early 7-0 lead.Â
Forest Hills responded in the second quarter with a lengthy 13 play drive capped off by a one yard touchdown run by freshman quarterback Adam Cecere. The Rangers added a two point conversion to give them an 8-7 lead. That score remained the same into halftime.Â
Forest Hills controlled the time of possession throughout much of the third quarter, with their first drive chewing up 6:31 off the game clock ending in an Andrew Pinkas 25 yard touchdown run. McCort stuffed the Forest Hills two point conversion attempt to set the Forest lead at 14-7. After a McCort turnover, the Rangers put together a similar drive resulting in another Andrew Pinkas touchdown scamper, this time a four yard run to put Forest Hills up 20-7
With the Crushers staring down a two score deficit in the fourth quarter, the Crushers' offense mounted an impressive 65 yard drive in just five plays highlighted by a big 25 yard pass connection from Cook to fellow junior Andre Nash. Levi Cook broke through into the open field later in the possession and scored from 18 yards out to cut into the Forest Hills lead 20-14. Bishop McCort could not get any closer, though, as Forest Hills recovered the ensuing onside kick attempt and polished off the game with an Ian Wieczorek 1 yard touchdown run in the waning seconds. Â
Bishop McCort's offense was led by junior quarterback Levi Cook's solid performance. Cook finished the day with 87 yards passing by completing 5-9 of his passing attempts with one going for a score. He also led the Crushers in the rushing department with 63 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown.
