Bishop McCort earned a hard fought victory over Westmont last Saturday by a score of 23-13. The Crushers overcame a slow start to knock off the Hilltoppers on the road. The win moves Bishop McCort to 6-1 on the year.
The first quarter was controlled by Westmont. The Hilltoppers opened the game with a 17 play drive that took off 7:30 off the clock. Lee Santee plunged into the end zone on a quarterback keeper to take an early 6-0 lead for Westmont. Bishop McCort responded with a lengthy drive of their own, but failed to convert on fourth down and the ball went back to the Hilltoppers.
The two teams traded possessions for much of the second quarter, but the Crushers finally got on the board with 1:12 left in the half.
Carnell Andrews dashed into the end zone from two yards out to tie the game at 6, which was the halftime score.
Bishop McCort opened the second half with some big passing plays from their senior quarterback,
Levi Cook. He connected with
Anthony Formica for 45 yards early in the drive, which ultimately set up a passing touchdown to
Elijah Benton from 23 yards out.
Chris Miller booted the extra point as the Crushers grabbed a 13-6 lead.
The game got a bit sloppy after that as
Andre Nash forced a Westmont fumble from Ian Valente, but Valente managed to intercept the ball right back on the very next play. The Hilltoppers could not capitalize, but McCort did on their next drive as
Chris Miller drilled a 28 yard field goal to extend the Crusher lead to 16-6.
Facing a two score deficit, Westmont responded with a big drive to answer the Crushers. The Hilltoppers operated a 15 play 65 yard drive that ran 7:24 off the clock. The possession was capped off by a Brock Bennett one yard touchdown run which brought Westmont to within 16-13, but that was a close as the Hilltoppers could get.
Andre Nash broke off an impressive 51 yard touchdown run with 4:11 left to add some separation and set the final at 23-13.
Bishop McCort received a number of standout defensive performance in the victory, including 20 and 19 tackles from
Andre Nash and
Ridge Phillips respectively. The offensive attack was led by senior quarterback
Levi Cook who finished the day with 126 passing yards and a touchdown on 6-9 attempts.
