Bishop McCort used a balanced offensive attack and a strong defensive performance to defeat Somerset 31-7. The win improved McCort to 3-1 on the season and it snapped a four game losing streak to the Golden Eagles.
Levi Cook paced the Crushers' offense with 127 passing yards and 51 rushing yards.
Both teams started slow as they each had to punt on their opening possessions. The Crushers took control on their second offensive series with a seven play drive that resulted in a five yard
Andre Nash touchdown run.
Shane Steele booted the extra point to give McCort a quick 7-0 lead. The teams exchanged the ball a few more times in the first but McCort's 7-0 held.
The opening drive in the second quarter for the Crushers resulted in
Chris Miller connecting on a 32 yard field goal attempt to increase the lead to 10-0. Somerset struggled to get anything going in the second, as McCort held them to 10 yards total in the frame. With 5:12 left in the first half, McCort opened a nine play 65 yard drive that concluded with a 13 yard touchdown run by
Anthony Walters. The scoreboard read 16-0 at halftime in favor of the Crushers.
After forcing Somerset to punt to start the third quarter, the McCort offense struck quickly.
Levi Cook found a wide open
Elijah Benton for a 43 yard touchdown pass. Cook then found
Zach Goins for the two point conversion to make it 24-0. A lengthy Somerset drive drained the remainder of the third and the start of the fourth quarter, but the McCort defense held their ground on fourth down to force a turnover on downs.
The Crushers increased their lead to 31-0 on a two yard
Anthony Walters touchdown run to seal the victory. Somerset tacked on a late touchdown to set the final at 31-7. McCort held Somerset to just 28 rushing yards on 38 carries throughout the game.
